The purpose of physiotherapy remains the same, no matter what you are seeking its services for.

Perhaps you are still suffering from the lingering pain of an injury. Perhaps you are recovering from surgery and trying to get your range of motion back. Perhaps your joints simply aren’t what they used to be, and you are looking for relief.

Whatever the case may be, physiotherapists are dedicated to relieving your pain and getting you back to your peak level of physical health.

A physiotherapist is a movement specialist, educated in analyzing mobility issues with walking, running, jumping, bending, stretching, and almost every other form of physical activity.

Our physiotherapist can pinpoint problem areas and create a customized treatment plan aimed at improving those areas.

Through in-office sessions and at-home exercises, patients strengthen their muscles and joints, improve their balance, build endurance, and experience pain relief, all without the unwanted harmful risks of drugs or surgery.

Vestibular therapy is also referred to as vestibular rehabilitation, and is conducted through a process of “adaptation and compensation.”

This means that the vestibular system is actually being “reprogrammed” through both passive and active therapies to form connections with the brain on adjusting imbalances and regaining stability.

Some common balance disorders that we treat through vestibular therapy include:

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
Vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis
Concussion
Migraines
Age related balance changes

At Anatomy Physiotherapy Clinic, we provide vestibular therapy for our patients suffering from balance disorders in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

Balance disorders refer to a broad range of conditions, but they are all connected by the effect they have on the vestibular system, also known as the inner ear.

Shockwave therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment for many tendon and muscle dysfunctions. This is a tool that applies acoustic pressure waves to the injured area, creating a local inflammatory response to stimulate and accelerate cell healing. It also increases blood flow to the injured area and dissolves calcifications.

Shockwave therapy has been shown to be effective for a multitude of conditions, including (but not limited to):
- Lateral epicondylalgia (tennis elbow)
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
- Shoulder tendinitis and tendinopathies
- Calcific tendinitis
- Achilles’ tendinitis and tendinopathies
- Plantar fasciitis
- Myofascial trigger points
- Hallux rigidus (stiff big toe)
- Bursitis
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
- Heel spurs
- Trigger finger

During your initial appointment for shockwave therapy, our physiotherapist will conduct a detailed assessment to determine whether shockwave would be an appropriate treatment for you. If you are an appropriate candidate, our physiotherapist will then administer the treatment, which itself lasts approximately 3-5 minutes. It is common to experience some mild pain or discomfort during the treatment, and the intensity of the shockwave will be adjusted accordingly. Because the goal of the treatment is to promote healing by stimulating a local inflammatory response, some people may experience mild soreness, redness, and swelling over the treated area for about 24 hours following treatment. The remainder of your treatment session will consist of a combination of manual therapy and remedial exercises to reinforce the effects of the shockwave.

The exact number of sessions required will depend on the nature of the injury and on individual response to the shockwave treatment. Most people can expect to notice a change within 3-6 sessions. As shockwave therapy has a cumulative effect, more than one treatment is typically needed to provide longer lasting relief.
